This presentation tells the story about Merrickville resident Ed Chandler and his wife’s trip down the Broken Skull and South Nahanni River this past July.
The story begins as their plane disappears over the mountains. Suddenly silent, the group is on their own with 525 KM and 22 days to go. No cell phones, showers or any other modern convenience. The guide soberly reminds us “don’t get hurt cuz you on you’re own…”
With an outfitter named Black Feather, the trip starts in the NWT, North of the Arctic Circle on the Broken Skull River. Over the next 150 KMs the river dropped 1500 feet and was continuous white water. From there it connected to the Nahanni River, which is one of the most iconic rivers in the world. It was the first UNESCO World Heritage Site and was designated a Canadian National Park in 1972 by Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau who fell in love with the river after paddling it.
