Numerous MAG Artists have donated works to be auctioned off in support of the second Syrian family sponsored by Rideau Bridge to Canada and Holy Trinity Anglican Church. The online auction, conducted by Rideau Auctions, runs from 9 am Dec 3 to 7 pm Dec 7. This is a great opportunity to buy local for the holiday season while helping a worthy family to resettle in our country.

The Al Abouds arrived in Merrickville October 7. They quarantined for two weeks and have now moved temporarily to a rented house. The family have two children. Odae Al Aboud is very well educated with a PhD in mathematics. He speaks and writes English well and will be able to secure a well-paid job. However, the first year is likely to be difficult because it’s always hard to get that first job, especially in the Covid-19 world.

Take a look at the great selection of works on offer at Rideau Auctions and post your bid. Remember — 9 am Dec 3 to 7 pm Dec 7.

In December 2015 six friends in Merrickville decided that they needed to do something to help. Like hundreds of other groups and organizations across Canada they elected to form a group with the aim of bringing a refugee family to live in our community. This group, originally known as the Merrickville Bridge to Canada, has been renamed Rideau Bridge to Canada (http://www.merrickville-bridge.ca/).The original group of Merrickville volunteers has now been expanded to include residents of Smiths Falls, Rideau Lakes and surrounding areas. Rideau Bridge to Canada is now hosting a second Syrian family, the Al Abouds. Sadly, CoVid has limited the opportunities to raise the balance of the required funds to support the family. Wanting to contribute to this amazing initiative, our organizations have come together for this special event.

The Merrickville Artists’ Guild (https://www.mag-artists.ca) , in existence since 1984 , has been an integral part of the cultural fabric of Merrickville-Wolford and surrounding areas.  Over 40 artists produce unique art comprised of paintings, prints, pottery, glass, wood, photography, jewelry, metal work, sculpture, and literature.

The Merrickville-Wolford and District Chamber of Commerce (https://merrickvillechamber.ca)  represents many of the businesses, service groups and other organizations within Merrickville-Wolford and the surrounding area. The Chamber offers grant application support, event support, representation to the Municipality and works tirelessly to improve the economy and well being of our community.

As community minded organizations, the Chamber and MAG recognize that strength comes through cooperation. We are extremely pleased to collaborate and wish to thank our members who have provided 69 items to be auctioned by Rideau Auctions (www.rideauauctions.com/online-auctions ) in a fundraiser starting on Dec 3rd, supporting the Rideau Bridge to Canada and the Al Abouds family.

“This is who we are and what we do, together”
