Derrick Hewitt, a proud Mi’kmaq from Newfoundland, is a master drum maker and skilled artisan, creating everything from traditional drums to moccasins, mitts, medicine bags, and dreamcatchers. His work honours the heritage he hopes to pass down to future generations.

Each fall, Derrick returns to his home in Newfoundland, where he teaches drum making at the school in Deer Lake and shares the rich history and culture of the Mi’kmaq people, including conversations on reconciliation.

Derrick is also recognized as one of five Scenic Moose and Caribou Hair Tufting Artisans in the world. What’s more, he and a friend have reimagined the moose hair technique used by the ancient Dene of the north west arctic to decorate their clothes into a breathtaking art form—a dying craft that brings together history, creativity, and culture.

Over the past 26 years, Derrick has generously donated over $800,000 worth of his art to charity, and each year, he continues to contribute proceeds from his sales to causes close to his heart.

Don’t miss this unique opportunity to hear Derrick’s incredible story, learn about his work, and explore the deep cultural roots of the Mi’kmaq people.
