About Robin

Robin Clugston is an artist raised in Ottawa and currently living in Merrickville. She holds a degree in illustration from Sheridan College. While she greatly enjoys her illustration work, she has found a real passion in painting in the last 10 years.

Robin focuses largely on urban and industrial scenes, highlighting the extraordinary that is found in ordinary moments and everyday scenes. Robin is intrigued by ‘found’ scenes that are not perhaps traditionally beautiful or aesthetically contrived in any way; places that are pedestrian or utilitarian—their appearance is created and affected purely by the daily functional actions of humans, the natural elements and passage of time. She feels that the fact that these scenes were created unintentionally makes them even more special and fascinating.

Robin enjoys recreating these found compositions through paint, sharing what might otherwise have been overlooked, and holding it up as meaningful and worthy of admiration. She works with acrylic paint mostly, sometimes gouache—depending on the level of detail and the desired effect. Robin’s work tends to be quite representational, but for her it is also about pushing her boundaries and experimenting with colour, mark-making and areas of abstraction to create an interesting painting, and to capture the mood and feeling of a time and place.
